What is WinU? WinU is a replacement user interface for Windows 95 with security access control, timeout, logging, web-browser oversight, remote administration, three levels of security control, and many other flexible configuration options. It is designed to be easy to set up and easy to use. On each computer, WinU can track up to 250,000 programs on 500 password-protected desktop's. Each desktop can have its own name, appearance, password, settings, and programs. The administrator can set the maximum allowed time for each program, and for the desk itself. WinU computers can be managed and controlled remotely across a network, or WinU can run on stand-a-lone machines.
What kinds of protection does WinU provide? WinU allows users full access to authorised software, yet prevents accidental or malicious system modifications. It lets the administrator specify the amount of time that each program can be used - even communications programs for the Internet or online services - while allowing a warning "grace period," with customable length and warning message, before terminating a running application. WinU can monitor all World Wide Web activity through Netscape or Microsoft browsers, logging all accessed websites and the amount of time at each site. It can make files or folders read-only or invisible to prevent access to unauthorised data. It can monitor and control any window, such as File Open and Save As dialogs, with which the user might access the file system. In addition, WinU can deny or password-protect Ctrl+AIt+Del, the Delete key and right-mouse context menus in Explorer and World Wide Web browsers, and the Windows and Apps keys found on newer keyboards. WinU can disable the keyboard at startup to prevent users from bypassing Windows 95, and it can lock the CD-ROM drive door to prevent the removal of valuable CDs.
What are the advantages of replacing the user interface? WinU gains many advantages by providing a replacement user interface. First, WinU's interface is much easier to use than the standard Windows 95 screen. Everybody knows what to do with a button: you press it. Next, since WinU has complete control over all programs, it is a reliable way to allow and deny program access. No "back door" is possible. Finally, if you need to group applications into categories, WinU's linked desktop's are much easier for novices to understand than the standard DOS/Windows hierarchical directory structure. WinU desktop's, linked with DeskLink and PrevDesk buttons, provide all the advantages of a hierarchical directory structure while avoiding its confusion. Does WinU include network-based remote administration? Yes. Though a network is not required, WinU will take full advantage of a network if one is present. WinU's system administration capabilities can maintain any size setup, from a single home PC to multi-computer networked installations. The administrator can dynamically control all access enterprise-wide from one central location. This includes the ability to update, logoff, shut down, reboot or reconfigure any or all WinU stations from a central location, send popup text messages to individual WinU stations or broadcast them to all WinU computers on the network. Passwords can be managed from a central location, and WinU includes network-based license metering Any WinU computer can be remotely and dynamically reconfigured. The administrator need only create one master setup (which can include per-computer customisation if desired) then distribute it over the network. WinU does not require a dedicated "manager" program running on a server. The site administrator can use WinU's "Remote Administration Kit" to control the situation from anywhere on the network, but these programs do not have to be constantly running; they are used only when needed to send messages to the WinU computers on the network.
